Françoise Combes Is an astrophysicist and a professor at the Paris Observatory. From École Normale Supérieure and a PhD from Paris Diderot University, with a thesis about "Dynamics and structure of galaxies". She works with the dynamics of galaxy formation and interactions between galaxies, numerical simulations, hydrodynamics and molecular clouds. She received the awards Tycho Brahe Prize of the European Astronomical Society in 2009, Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 2006, Silver medal of CNRS in 2001. She is a member of the French Academy of Sciences, and is among the highly cited astronomers in Space Sciences of the ISI. She is presently the coordinator of the ALMA observing proposals panels.
Garth Illingworth is professor of Astronomy at UC Santa Cruz, and staff astronomer at the Lick Observatory.
Prof. Illingworth's primary research interest is galaxy formation. He
has studied the structure, kinematics, and stellar populations of nearby elliptical and SO galaxies with the
goal of inferring how they were built up
in the distant past ("galaxy archeology"). He was deputy Principal
Investigator on the Advanced Camera for
HST (the Hubble Space Telescope). By using this camera, he has been
able to view directly galaxies within
the first billion years of the Big Bang - looking back in time over 13
billion years.
He also worked to develop the concept for an 8-m diameter cooled
infrared space telescope (which
eventually became the James Webb Space Telescope JWST). He has been
working with other scientists
and technologists to develop space telescopes that are larger and even
more powerful than HST.
Is an Astronomer at IAS, the Université Paris XI, and a member of the Académie de Sciences
His research focuses on observations of the cosmic microwave background radiation. He is the Principal Investigator of the HFI (High-Frequency Instrument) aboard the satellite PLANCK.
Jochen Liske is staff astronomer at the European Southern Observatory (ESO),
working in the E-ELT Science Office.
He spends half his time working on the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), which will be Europe's premier ground-based optical and infrared facility in the coming decades.
The other half of his time, he spends doing research in extragalactic astronomy and observational cosmology - in particular, galaxy formation and evolution using large surveys such as the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey, and the intergalactic medium using QSO absorption lines.
Is a Professor of Physics and Astrophysics at the Institute for Theoretical Physics of the University of Heidelberg. He is the author of hundreds of papers in
cosmology, covering theoretical, statistical and observational topics. He wrote, with S. Tsujikawa, a reference book on dark energy, "Dark Energy: theory and observations", and is one of the lead scientists in the planned european
space mission Euclid.

Peter Schneider is professor of Astrophysics at Bonn University.
He is first author of the standard reference for `Gravitation
Lenses' - his major research field, which he partly
pioneered. Though mainly a theoretician, he participated in
several observational projects, among them the discovery of
cosmic shear in 2000. He was the Letters Editor of Astronomy &
Astrophysics from 1998 to 2006, member of the Astronomy Working
Group at ESA for four years, and published a textbook on
`Extragalactic astronomy and cosmology' in 2006. Schneider is member
of the German Academy of Science (Leopoldina).
Rubens Machado is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the
Department of Astronomy, at IAG (University of Sao Paulo). His
research interests include numerical simulations of barred galaxies
and of galaxy cluster mergers.
Thaisa Storchi Bergmann is a Professor at Instituto de Física, Universidade
Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, where she is head of the Astrophysics
Research Group. She is member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences
and of the Academy of Sciences of the Developing World (TWAS),
has about 250 publications and more than 6000 citations.
Her observations of spectra of starburst galaxies led to the derivation
of a new extragalactic extinction law and the building of average
spectral energy distributions used by observatories worldwide.
Her main scientific contributions are in the study ofinteractions between
supermassive black holes (SMBH) and their host galaxies, and most recently
dedicated to the characterization of the feeding processes of SMBH:
(1) via observations and modelling of unresolved accretion flows
at thousands of gravitational radii; (2) via observations of
resolved gas inflows in the inner few hundred parsecs
of the host galaxy with Integral Field Spectrographs.
Is a Professor of astronomy and physics at Michigan State University. His research is focused on the search for themost metal-poor stars, and the formation of the earliest stars in the Galaxy. He has been leading the field since the 1990s.
On leave from MSU, he is presently Director of the Kitt Peak National Observatory and Associate Director of the National Optical Astronomy Observatory
Is an Astronomer at the Institute for Computational Cosmology at the University of Durham, and a professor at the University of Antwerp, Belgium.
He is a specialist in the formation of the first objects, high-redshift quasars, cosmic reionization, and cosmological simulations of galaxy formation.
Is the leader of the Theoretical Astrophysics group at the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies, and a Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Heidelberg.
His main interests are galaxy formation and numerical techniques to study cosmic structure formation, both based on collisionless and hydrodynamic simulations. In order to allow use of the full power of modern supercomputers, he has developed massive parallel simulation algorithms for distributed memory computers, and has studied new methods for discretizing the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations, for example on a moving mesh. He has been working to develop new calculational tools that allow multi-physics, multi-scale simulations on peta-scale supercomputers.
